In the wind energy industry, more than 500 incidents were reported for onshore wind farms in the UK in 2020. 86% of those incidents were on live wind farms. The key risk areas identified were during routine maintenance, during access/egress, and while working with electrical systems, many in confined spaces.
The unique combination of hazards involved in wind farm operations, both onshore and offshore, requires specialist knowledge and equipment to ensure full protection and compliance.
- Build-up of gases in confined spaces can displace oxygen and cause asphyxiation, toxic gases may be present and explosion risks may increase. Both gas detection and respiratory protection may be necessary.
- Working at extreme height is an unescapable factor of wind turbine construction and maintenance, requiring specialist fall arrest equipment.
- Any power plant carries a risk of Arc Flash: An intense burst of energy passing through the air that can cause serious harm to life and limb. Fire resistant and anti-static PPE are essential to prevent ignition of sudden explosions and protect from burns.
- The very nature of working in renewable energy plants will involve exposure to wind, noise, slippery conditions, extreme cold and wet environments. All these carry significant health and safety risks.
