Respiratory protection in the painting and coating industries is becoming more important with growing awareness of the dangers of isocyanates.
Solvent based paints are particularly high in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including isocyanates, which can lead to unpleasant health effects. VOCs are invisible and spread through the air like smoke. Short term exposure threatens many symptoms which can increase the possibility of an accident occurring, such as headaches, dizziness, visual disturbance and memory loss, whilst long-term exposure can lead to loss of motor coordination, vertigo, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting, occupational asthma and decreased lung function. Particularly severe cases may experience organ and nerve damage.
Anchor Safety Experts have created a helpful guide to answer all questions about the dangers of isocyanates and when and how to protect your workforce from them. Respiratory protection equipment (RPE) may well be needed at every stage of the painting or coating process and the Anchor Safety team can help you understand the varying types of RPE and decide which will best protect your workforce. There are varying RPE solutions for painting and coating, from PAPR (Powered Air Purifying Respirators) to fixed airline solutions, with a variety of masks and head tops to suit all face shapes and types, including PAPR for those with beards.
